Turning waste into works of art

Our society has become an online consumer of products and services. An unfortunate result of this is the amount of waste due to cardboard shipping boxes. Starting in 2020, I started to notice the growing amount of cardboard being thrown out every trash day in our neighborhood. I decided to collect this waste and turn someone’s “Trash” into someone’s “Treasure.” All work I create is made from recycled corrugated cardboard.

A versatile collection inspired by places and creativity.

I view my creative process with corrugated cardboard in the same way that I approach painting a painting. Starting with a blank canvas, it is important to build layer upon layer to establish the illusion of space and distance. Multiple layering within each figure creates shadow and proportion. As my work progresses, I give more attention to the quality, grade, and subtle shades of brown in the cardboard. These nuances allow me to manipulate the cardboard, generating a greater range of depth and field in my subject matter.

“That’s when I saw a potential benefit for recycled cardboard.”

The concept came to life as a result of the pandemic. As 2020 rolled on and the entire country went into isolation, I started to notice our growing pile of corrugated boxes due to all the shipments we were receiving.
